From Dust Mites to Dander: How Often Should Carpet Be Replaced?

Your carpet is more than what you walk on every day. This field of fibers can impact your health and can influence the value of your house.

It also doesn’t last forever.

Every house sees different challenges that affect how often should carpet be replaced.

Below are the biggest things to know when deciding when to replace carpet.

Normal Wear and Tear

Carpet is made to be walked on, but it isn’t indestructible. So how can normal usage break down a carpet?

The first issue is matting. This is an area of carpet pressed lower than the rest due to things like furniture and heavy foot traffic.

The other common issue is curling. This is where parts of a carpet are curling up from edges created from tears or edges against walls. Curling is a serious issue that causes accidents regularly.

While you can remedy these issue for a while, replacement will eventually be the best fix.

Unwanted Guests

Carpet is a great material to use as a soft flooring option, but you and your family aren’t the only things that enjoy it.

It’s hard to see, but carpet collects dirt, dust, and dander – food for allergens like dust mites and mold.

While you can clean your carpets, it is almost impossible to remove mold completely.

Now, you may be considering replacing all your carpet with hardwood. While we do have a great selection, don’t swear off carpet completely though. It still has many benefits, including reducing airborne dust levels.

Just know that more messes mean a closer date for when to replace your carpet.

Selling Your Home

So what if your carpet is clean and relatively new? If you are selling your home then it still may be time to replace your carpet.

Buyers are looking for homes that they can imagine themselves living in. Realtors and buyers take issue with a carpet that is irregular in color, in style, or shows obvious usage.

Even if you think your carpet is fine, realtors see more value in a new carpet as opposed to an old one. Flooring is one of the most notable features in a home. It may determine whether buyers even consider your house.

And if they do consider your house, buyers could ask for a discounted price if you don’t replace the carpet.

This means less money for you.

So How Often Should Carpet Be Replaced?

The simple answer is that it depends on your carpet.

If kept clean and not over-used, then your carpet should have a lifespan of eight to ten years.

However, your carpet may need to retire after five to eight years if it’s seeing excess foot traffic, heavy furniture, and or too many fluids. This timeframe may be even shorter if your carpet is becoming a health issue or is driving down property value.
